Saturday June 20
I woke up before
dawn to the twittering of little birds. I put the earplugs back in and
slept till 7:30. Eventually I got out of bed. Man those air
mattresses are comfortable, especially when you get to sleep on a big
one alone in a cozy sleeping bag with multiple blankets in your own
tent. I put on a sweater, made some tea, and was contemplating
breakfast when a mom from the church camp next door came over and asked me
if I wanted some wood, they were leaving and wouldn't be needing it.
I replied “Yes thank you” and all through breakfast the mini
Christians delivered us enough wood to last the rest of our camping
trip. I must have good Karma for suffering through their devotions.
Sausage, eggs, and
peanut butter pancakes consumed, Ruben was ready to reattempt the
hike. He assured me that the mosquitoes would have vanished and and
the poison oak wouldn't be a problem if I was wearing pants and socks
and shoes. I resisted for a while thinking a mid morning boat ride
would be better, but Jodi fell asleep again and Ruben was insistent.
I geared up, we iced up the coolers then took off on the hike again.
We made it to a little cove that we decided should be called
butterfly cove because of all the butterflies that kept flying near
us, checking out Ruben's hair. Ru explored while I pulled out my
tiny netbook and typed this blog post. Its wordy because I had
plenty of time. Ru reported that he found: millipedes, slugs, wild
variations of ladybugs, mosquitoes, a snake, butterflies, a couple
birds and a bird nest, bees and dragonflies.
Coming back to camp
we watched our neighbors across the road erect a shelter, over their
car. Ru had some rather snarky comments about this and I was proud of
him for his snarkyness. We laughed, and giggled, and smirked then
made some fantastic sandwiches and I laid down for a nap. Jodi still
slept.
Just as I was
drifting off I heard Jeremy arrive with the old windsurfer board. He
had picked it up at moms and delivered it for us. We changed into
our swimsuits and went for a paddle in the little cove near our
campsite. It was so much fun. There was much giggling, falling into
the water, and going nowhere slowly. Jeremy took a comedic slip and
fell getting some mud under his toenail, but that was the only
casualty. We had intended to go for a boat ride on “School's Out”
but the weather was clouding up and I wanted to play some music. We
jammed a few guitar tunes, then Jeremy played banjo and I learned
Arkansas traveler. Jodi took a nap.
Ruben put himself to
bed at about nine, choosing to use the remaining battery in his
tablet instead of joining us for a smore and Jeremy and I sat by the
fire until we were fading. Jeremy left and headed to the coast for
some early morning deep sea fishing, and I slept a while till I woke
to the cool breeze blowing through the tent. I got up and put a
blanket on Ruben. His tent smelled like farts so I opened his window
and counted my blessings that I got to sleep by myself again.
