Maui Tuesday and Wednesday Morning

Normally this is all Em and Ru stuff, but Ru is with his grandma while Em gets her adult time with Cab. The most stressful part of this trip was Ruben taking my car to his grandmothers (60 miles south on I-5 through stop and go traffic), but he accomplished this with grace the day before my flight.

As soon as Ru texted me that he had made it safely to grandma's house I poured myself a drink and finished my packing.

I was up at 7 on the 13th, Cab had told me we were leaving at 8, and I was on track to be ready to go when on a lark I asked him if we were really leaving at 8, and he said no. We could leave at 9. I think he just wanted me to be super ready to go. Made me wonder if I'm one of those people who is late all the time. I might be.

So I spent a few minutes meditating. I had woken up with a headache, body aches, and just general inflammation. I should probably go see a doctor about it, because I have a suspicion it's arthritis, but they would probably just tell me to keep moving and take ibuprofen, which is what I'm doing anyway.

Cab drove us to the airport, and we had no hassles. Checked bags and security were no big deal. We waited about a half an hour for our plane to board, and we found our seats, pretty close to the back. I had to sit in the middle, because Cab likes to sit on the isle. The window seat was a small middle aged Asian woman I didn't chat with much, but who seemed friendly.

The seats behind us filled in with two families, which included about 6 small children. Cab's excitement visibly fell. He spent the trip unhappy, anxious, bored, or stressed, I couldn't figure out which. I watched three movies on my laptop. 1. The Tourist  2. The Greatest Showman  3. National Lampoon's Vacation.   I highly recommend all three. I also highly recommend the earplugs with noise cancelling headphones I wore over the top. I could just hear the movie, and not much else.

It was a long flight to have a middle seat. My body hurt pretty bad despite the meds, and although I had brought snacks I was pretty hungry when we landed. Cab perked right up, got us to our rental jeep, and we went to Costco to get supplies.

On the road around the island we were in heavy traffic. The drive took an hour and a half to go 40 miles. Fortunately the view was lovely most of the way. As we arrived at high tide, there were places where the ocean waves were practically lapping at the freeway. We found the condo, and checked in. Our unit was dated, with old wicker furniture, but clean and the view is amazing.

I had dinner (Costco roast chicken and salad) by myself on the lanai while Cab went to Safeway in Lahaina to get the rest of the things he couldn't live without (creamer) and he also got me some bonus ice cream! It took him so long to shop he missed the sunset, but I represented for us by sitting in the lawn chair and setting the Maui sun.
We arrived around 3:30 local time, over 6 hours in the air.

We took this picture to text to our friends playing trivia. They had owned the music round.

Outside the condo

View from the lanai

The trees I was sitting under to watch the sunset

My knees with the sunset. The triangles on sticks were torches that were lit just after the sun went down.

I took this picture with my real camera (not phone) I like how you can see Molokai rising up to the right, and the sailboat to the left of the sun.

As the sunset was happening the bird families in these bushes were going nuts. They were jumping around and singing loudly. We heard them again in the morning.

Cab and I walked about a bit, and I had a glass of wine (sweet cheap white zin) and we sacked out. The bed was rock hard and as miserable as a bed can get for me. There is no AC in the condo, which was a blessing for me, but probably as miserable for Cab as the hard bed was for me.

You reader are my witness I will NEVER travel without an air mattress again. I'm thinking a self inflating camp pad which could go on top of one of those miserable mattresses and take up little space in my luggage.

We did however survive the night, and after the miracle that is coffee I felt less sore than I did yesterday, and was ready to hit the water. It was however only 6:30am... lol Still on mainland time.
Cab joined me for coffee at 7am and we listened to the symphony of tropical birds (including roosters) and frogs waking up for the day.
