Today I sat down at the computer and figured out our exact route, travel time and mileage for our upcoming trip. All told we are planning on driving 3100 miles!
Trip preparations so far have included buying a stereo for my mom's Camry, (which she is graciously lending us for our epic journey) getting a power strip so we for sure have enough power for our various gadgets, and ripping a bunch of fun movies (about road trips) and Simpson's episodes onto my computer for the drive. Not that we don't intend to look at some scenery. I also researched some fun roadside attractions, sadly the biggest ball of twine is nowhere on our route. In Flagstaff we are staying at a motor lodge on Route 66 that should be fantastically kitschy. I also contacted a few rock climbing instructors in Tucson... I'm trying to make Ruben's dreams come true. What fun is seeing all those rocks without climbing some of them?
I'm so busy with work right now with state testing and conferences coming up, that this will likely be the last planning day before I shove things in a suitcase late next week. Freddie has finals coming up and is spending all his free time breathing math, and Ru... well he's just keeping on with the usual kid stuff. I promised him when we get back from our trip he can start gymnastics. Soccer wasn't his thing but to his credit he's finishing it out, and really improved. (Piano is another story)
We've got a house-sitter scheduled, the garden seeds are in the dirt, and our ducks are as in a row as we can shove them at this point.
Fred and I were coming back from getting some take-out on Friday and I asked him "So who do you think is going to freak out first on this trip?" He just patted my leg and smiled.

Update 3/17/2013 We have succeeded in finishing the spring cleaning, getting all the laundry washed, the garden starts in little pots, (as well as houseplant starts for family and friends) the fish tanks cleaned, and now I'm looking at empty suitcases and a literal mountain of laundry to fold. My schedule this week keeps me busy with work and errands till 8 pm so I'm doubly looking forward to a vacation! Friday can't come soon enough!
